CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Theatre classes at CHS are filled with fun, laughter and a lot of theatre work.  Our shared philosophy is that we are training theatre artists who are ready for the rigorous expectations of college theatre programs, professional theatre careers or participation in community theatre companies. With backgrounds in professional theatre the teachers and directors at CHS bring a wealth of experience to every class and production. 

 

Introduction to Theatre

Prerequisite: None

Credits: 1 Fine Arts

This class is a comprehensive introduction to the theatre from acting to history and literature to design. We will read plays from the various time periods and styles, view videos of productions and film adaptations and study production aspects such as lighting, set, costume, and prop design, as well as the fundamentals of acting: Students will perform and design a variety of projects during the term.  


Fundamentals of Acting

Prerequisite: Introduction to Theatre or approval of the instructor

Credits 1/2 Fine Arts

This is a further study into the skills required of actors. Students should have a basic understanding of the principles of performance prior to enrollment. Students will learn speech for stage, period theatre styles, character development, basic stage combat, script analysis, acting for the camera, resumes and headshots, choosing an agent, auditioning techniques including choosing and performing a monologue, selling a song, and basic choreography.


Play Production

Prerequisite: Introduction to theatre and approval of the instructor

Credits: 1/2 Fine Arts

This class is designed to prepare the students for work producing plays including units on directing, stage management, house management, publicity, theatre business management, grant writing, costume design and construction, mask design and construction, and advanced make-up design and application. Students in the class will participate in main stage and studio productions as well as continue to work on personal portfolios and professional certifications.


Technical Theatre

Prerequisite: Introduction to Theater and Instructor approval

Credits: 1/2 Fine Arts

This is a further study into technical theatre, expanding on the concepts covered in the Intro class. Many advanced elements of production and design will be covered, including rigging for the stage, stage management, set design and construction, lighting design and theory, sound design and theory and properties. The class functions as the primary source for the design building and running crew for our major and minor productions. Students in the class will participate in main stage and studio productions a well as continue to work on personal portfolios and professional certifications. Students completing this course and its requirements will have opportunities to work backstage on major visiting productions to the CHS Auditorium.


Ensemble Theatre

Prerequisite: Introduction to Theatre , fundamentals of acting and Instructor approval

Credits: 1/2 Fine Arts

This is an intensive studio course that functions as an ensemble performance company. Students should have a working knowledge of the principles of performance and character development prior to enrollment. Students will engage in advanced acting theory, intensive stage work, physical theatre, historical and philosophical inquiry, and stylistic acting techniques including children’s theatre, masked theatre, pantomime, reader’s theatre, and period styles. Students in the class will work as a repertory company and will perform in locations around the local area including classrooms, libraries, guest stages etc.
